Hello and welcome to LightPath CBT and Counselling

My name is Gillian Doak and I am a fully qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist.

If you’re finding things difficult at the moment, you may be feeling anxious, low mood, lacking in confidence, or simply struggling to cope with everyday life. Sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start of what might help.

I offer a supportive space where you can talk openly about what you’re experiencing, without judgement. We will work together to understand what is happening and look at practical ways to help you move forward.

I work with adults 16 and over and offer face to face appointments in Falkirk and selected areas in and around Glasgow, as well as online appointments.

Whether you’re dealing with a specific difficulty or feeling that things have become harder to manage, therapy can give you the opportunity to step back, understand what’s going on and begin to make meaningful changes.

About Me

My decision to become a psychotherapist was shaped by my own experience of therapy. Experiencing the difference that therapy could make in my own life inspired me to retrain and support others who may be going through difficult times.

My own journey felt like a move from darkness towards light, which is where the name LightPath CBT and Counselling came from. For me, it represents the possibility of finding a way forward, even when things may feel overwhelming or difficult.

How I work

I believe that therapy should feel like a safe and supportive space where you can be yourself and talk openly without fear of judgement.

My approach is warm, friendly and down-to-earth. We won’t spend sessions with me sitting in silence while you do all the talking, we will work together as a team at a pace that feel right for you.

I will actively work with you to understand what is happening and why you may be thinking, feeling or behaving the way you do. Together, we can identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck and explore practical strategies and coping mechanisms that you can use in your everyday life.

My aim is for you to feel heard, understood and supported, while also helping you develop the tools and understanding to help you move forward and start to feel better.

CBT and what to expect

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is an evidenced based talking therapy that helps you understand the connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviours.  It can help you identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that may be keeping your difficulties going.

During therapy, we will work together to gently explore these connections and understand what is happening for you and we can then work on developing practical strategies and coping techniques that you can use in everyday life.

While my main approach is CBT, I also draw on other techniques as I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Where appropriate, I also draw on schema informed techniques to understand how earlier experiences may have shaped patterns in your life.

I believe everyone has their own unique story so I will tailor therapy to your needs.
